What information appears on a card payment receipt?
When a customer pays by card using a payment terminal (TPE), the printed receipt contains a series of codes and data that may seem cryptic at first glance.
Each receipt follows a standardized format defined by the GIE Carte Bancaire. While some fields are customizable (like the merchant name or welcome message), most are fixed and automatically generated by the terminal.
Here’s what you’ll typically find:
Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Indicates the payment method used (e.g., CB, Visa, Mastercard). |
| Custom message set by the merchant (e.g., “Musée de la Mer”). |
| Internal reference for the card type. |
| Usually “CB” for Carte Bancaire. |
| Timestamp of the transaction. |
| The name of the business as registered. |
| Unique ID linking the merchant to their bank. |
| Only the last few digits are shown for security. |
| Used to verify transaction authenticity in case of dispute. |
10. Card Expiry Date | Expiration date of the customer’s card. |
11. File Number | Sent to the bank; includes:First 3 digits: TPE numberNext 6 digits. Transaction IDFollowing 2 digits. Batch ID (telecollection)Final letter. Card type (e.g., “C” for chip card) |
